Alleppey

The city of Alappuzha is regarded as one of Keralla’s prize gems. Can’t say I disagree. The bus ride to it was funny. As I’m trying to arrange the meeting time with the hostel owner, I ask the bus driver who tells me we’re 2km away. I message the dorm telling them when I’ll get there, 5km later, I ask again and get 2km again, I tell the Hostel people. Clearly, way more than 2km (say 5km), I ask again and get 2km as the answer. This pattern continues until I Google it to find 56km, which in India means between 1 to 1.5 hours.

ow driving buses in India is NOTHING like Australia. It’s the only place I know where buses overtake motorbikes rather than the reverse at a 10:1 ratio. These guys can position their bus, while flat to the boards between vehicles with 50mm each side and no, that’s not exagerating.

Once in Alleppey, I was greeted by my Beachfront property to stay in, owned and operated by 2 very enthusiasting young guys. They knew their business and were very proud of what they were doing .

Less than 60 paces to the water line, surrounded by locals with very few tourists.

And all for the Princely sum of about $7/night!

Walking around Alappuzha was quite the treat. Watching the contrast of life was amazing

Setting up your own prayer temple
Family outing
Women working on the River Bank garden

A nice night walk through the streets of Alleppey found me wathching locals set up their corner worship point.

Fishermen selling their catch
Really don’t know how this translates
Nothing is ever Worn Out, with Neil-Like engineering a Tuk-Tuk becomes
A Tip-Truck!

Religion is very strongly the culture. Everyone finds their time and place to pray. Paying homage to the Gods is ever present in every aspect of life. Here’s one building owners tribute.

This isn’t a religious site, it’s all constructed on the roof of his commercial shops building
What a pity all the street cabling inhibits the view.

My personal favourite was the end of the road I was staying on.

Safety barriers, Guard Rails? Why bother? Nanny state not required!

Plenty more to see around Alleppey and more photos to share.

Next adventure is the Backwaters Tour
